Affiliations Società Italiana degli Economisti and American Economic Association Research Path The challenge to formulate models and methods to test the (standard and especially non standard) propositions of macroeconomic theory and investigate the possible microeconomic foundations is the unifying factor of his research activities. He devoted two volumes to the microfoundations of macroeconomic theory (1990; 1994). At the beginning of his research activities, he has been involved in the role of increasing returns in the mechanics of the growth process (1981). Subsequently, he explored the following related issues: economies of scale and optimal pricing strategies (1986 c.), (different sources of) externalities and productivity (1986 b.; 1995; 1997), optimal markups and demand fluctuations (1996), labor productivity and asymmetrical business cycle (2014). He worked in simulating alternative policy options (scenarios analysis), generally using a structural approach in the Cowles Commission tradition (1989; 1994; 1990-96; 2000-03; 2002), and, in this context, modeling and estimating demand and price functions (1982; 1986 a.), and the consumption function (1983 i. and ii.). More recently, he was interested in exploring the links between institutions, economic change, productivity and growth. He dealt, on both theoretical and empirical grounds, with the study of the relationship between economic growth and the efficiency of different institutional “environments”, such as the public sector (2012; 2013 -A), the technological systems (2001, 2.), the illegal organisations (2000). Within this research field, he was also involved in considering the contribution of public capital to growth (2001, 1.), the effects of corporatist institutions on total factor productivity in Europe (2002), the effects on the long run equilibrium growth path of a change in the structure and composition of taxation (2010). He is also author of an introductory textbook in macroeconomics (2013 -B). Areas of interest: cyclical fluctuations and long run growth; macro-econometric modeling, forecasting and policy analysis; microeconomic foundations of macroeconomic theory; economic change, productivity and institutions.
