Course objectives Founded in 1735, aesthetics focuses on different issues, such as the philosophy of beauty, the essence of the work of art, the theory of sensible knowledge, and the impact of aesthetics on the formation and education of citizens. The course aims at presenting the most relevant themes of the history of aesthetics, starting from the analysis of the classics. Finally, it will be shown how recent results from scientific fields have renewed traditional themes of aesthetics, providing new elements for a deeper conceptualization of traditional issues. Course contents Part A: The origins of the term ‘aesthetics’. Aesthetics and knowledge. Aesthetics and arts. Aesthetics as philosophy of beauty. Romantic aesthetics. Aesthetics of the ugly. Aesthetics and nature. Part B: Art and beauty. Art, representation, and thruth. Aesthetics and biology. Experimental aesthetics.
