This is an introductive course to sociolinguistics. The epistemological setting of this branch of knowledge will be discussed, and its basic elements and tools will be introduced. Specific attention will be paid to two major sociolinguistic approaches, i.e. correlational and interactional sociolinguistics.

The lessons aim at developing and refining students’ competences in English. Methods, techniques, and contents of the course will be shaped on the basis of the background knowledge and learning modalities and paces of the students.
In particular, the students will be trained to:

• learn and recognize most of the English grammar structures;
• learn some phonological characteristics of varieties of English spoken in Great Britain and the United States;
• create journalistic and academic texts in English;
• recognize linguistic varieties through different texts.

The language of journalism and some aspects related to British and American journalism will be given specific relevance.
The goal of the course is for the students to develop all the competences in the foreign language (speaking, writing, listening, reading, communicative) through the active participation in the class activities and the use of authentic texts (newspaper and magazine articles, news reports, newscasts, news releases) and of the textbook. In this course, English language will be the tool to learning and reasoning both on aspects of language and on those connected with journalism as a profession. In class, students will be engaged in a number of individual and group activities which include the work on a personal learning portfolio.
Classes will be primarily taught in English. Participation and attendance are strongly recommended.
We will be using an eclectic approach: lesson plans will be characterized by the use of multimedia materials along with the textbook. The function of these tools is that of interacting with the students involving them in activities that stimulate them cognitively and that make it possible for their different intelligences, personalities, and motivation to find the most suitable learning way(s).

Learning a language is, for a huge part, practicing it, so the students are expected to engage in discussions, to ask and answer questions, to detect errors with one another, to try to communicate in English, challenging the fear of being wrong or making errors.
The attendance will be assessed by collecting signatures, random checking of IDs and in-class exercises.

EXAM for NON-ATTENDING STUDENTS
The final exam includes a written test a. The written test will include a test of reading comprehension on a journalistic text and exercises on linguistic structures (especially grammar and vocabulary). Students will be asked to discuss the topics covered in the textbook.

EXAM for NON-ATTENDING STUDENTS
The course includes 36 hours of lessons. In order to be considered an attending student, you can only miss a maximum of 6 hours.
The attending students can substitute the final oral examination by preparing a learning portfolio. More details will be provided in class.

All’interno dell’orario sono previste esercitazioni scritte e il corso prevede la lettura dei giornali (almeno 2 cartacei e web) ogni giorno con impegno di almeno 1 ora.

The network as a tool for knowledge creation: data, control and freedom.
The course aims at analyzing the most common devices for sharing information in order to focus on risks and opportunities.
The communication technologies revolution faces a big transformation: the original open spaces are about to be substituted by private walled gardens, in which the user is welcomed as well as restrained.
The data mining activity – well-knows as big data technology – extraction of valuable pieces of information among those directly or indirectly offered by the users, represents one of the central elements of the network organization both in economical and social terms. These strategies pose not only privacy problems (as it is easily shown) but also problems relative to the knowledge model that seems to impose on humanities as well as social sciences. Such a model can be adopted, by using an epistemological approach that could foresee as well as a monitor human habits and behaviors.
The course is based on a critical approach on the relationships between freedom and control within the digital communication devices. It tackles the question from the point of view of the interaction between freedom opportunities and control mechanisms, which stands at the core of practices and techniques of digital apparatuses, with special regards to their social, political, epistemological dimensions.
During the course there will be a laboratory on the digital press office work. In the laboratory it is preview an active presence of experts in the field that will share their expertises with the students.

THE COURSE DEALS WITH THE ORIGIN OF LANGUAGE FROM AN EVOLUTIONARY PERSPECTIVE. This is an introductive course to the persuasion strategies, that can help to uphold and confirm one’s own opinion. The most important figures of speech are analyzed and classified. Basic elements of argumentation theory are presented, with special regard to advertising and journalistic texts.

The Laboratory focuses on two aspects of academic and professional writing.
The first one concerns the stages of writing process (e.g., planning, editing).
The second one concerns the specific features of some text types (e.g., descriptive, narrative, argumentative texts).
For each stage of the writing process, and for each text type analyzed, students will provide written exercises.

There aren't any texts of exam preparation.

The course starts with an introduction to the reasons and sense of historical knowledge and aims to give students knowledge and understanding of the fundamental processes of the contemporary age from 1848 to 1990s. Major historiographical and methodological issues will be addressed.

Dal giornale dell'800 ai cronisti metropolitani



- Il quotidiano d'informazione, esempio del Corriere della Sera, come è strutturato: la prima pagina gli editoriali le sezioni dal politico agli spettacoli e sport, le priorità , come si costruisce un giornale. Dalla vignetta in prima pagine alle foto e gli spazi per i testi. Il sito web e le piattaforme multimediali iPad .



- Elementi obbligatori come la gerenza, i diritti doveri di cronaca, l'indipendenza del giornalismo, la legge, le querele, la diffamazione a mezzo stampa. I contenuti degli articoli di cronaca



- Giornali di carta e web, differenze e sovrapposizioni, un mondo in continuo cambiamento. La necessità di essere sui social , i commenti, le dirette i sondaggi. Esempi di notizie da web come la cronaca del terremoto, notizie internazionali, i link, la cronaca come narrazione completa.



- Le notizie “calde”, sensibili e istituzionali, la cronaca e le inchieste prima di tutto. Poi la cultura gli spettacoli e sport, quando questi ultimi vanno in prima pagina



- Come si compone un articolo di cronaca dal lead alla narrazione. Cosa succede in redazione ogni giorno, le riunioni i cambiamenti durante la giornata, come si muovono le notizie e quando si chiudono sui due giornali: carta e web. le notizie di approfondimento e quelle in pillole per iPad. I blog come “la27esima ora” e i canali si settore come “Salute”.



- Le fonti e la rubrica del giornalista, gli appuntamenti istituzionali, gli argomenti di attualità, le notizie viste da vicino, quando andare sul posto, con chi parlare, la specializzazione non è più in un solo settore.



- Esempi di cronaca bianca come il crollo del palazzo a Ponte Milvio, i blitz dei vigili urbani contro il commercio abusivo, i controlli dei carabinieri ai B&b, il turismo e le belle arti a Roma. Esempi di cronaca nera come omicidio studente americano sul Tevere stupro a Colle Oppio e violenze sulle donne. Altri esempi: politica e cronaca giudiziaria.



- Le notizie di informazione quelle istituzionali quelle di servizio le lettere al direttore le denunce. L'impegno civile , il giornalismo civico, il reportage, l’ inviato, i rischi del mestiere, esempi di reporter che con le inchieste hanno cambiato la storia.



- Il giornalismo ai tempi del web: siti delle testate cartacee, i blogger, Facebook e citizen journalist. Alcuni esempi "Roma fa schifo" e "Roma pulita", gli occhi sulla città dei cittadini responsabili e il nuovo giornalismo.



- I siti web di informazione e l’importanza di essere connessi, la visibilità di foto e video. L’informazione per immagini come giornalismo del futuro. Gli strumenti di lavoro : dalla penna al cellulare e tablet.



- I cronisti metropolitani: come si costruisce una notizia per immagini. le fotogallery con le didascalie il legame con gli articoli, i video come si costruiscono quanto durano come mettere testi voce e musica.

All’interno dell’orario sono previste esercitazioni scritte e il corso prevede la lettura dei giornali (almeno 2 cartacei e web) ogni giorno con impegno di almeno 1 ora.
I testi saranno comunicati dalla docente nel corso delle lezioni.

This is an introductive course to the persuasion strategies, that can help to uphold and confirm one’s own opinion. The most important figures of speech are analyzed and classified. Basic elements of argumentation theory are presented, with special regard to advertising and journalistic texts.
