21002062 - HISTORY OF TOWN AND TERRITORY (objectives) The course aims to provide a framework of 'historic city' as a result of projects, linguistically defined, characteristic and distinctive of the urban dimension; starting from synthetic references to the cities of pre-roman and roman times, the course will explore some specific issues regarding the foundation and urban transformation during the period between the middle ages and the modern age. The knowledge acquired by students will find specific applications in the processing of papers relating to entire cities or parts of them (streets, squares, fortifications, etc.) considered particularly significant for urban history; their original features and the subsequent transformations will be highlighted, until the current phase. - Derived from 21002062 STORIA DELLA CITTÀ E DEL TERRITORIO in ARCHITETTURA - PROGETTAZIONE URBANA LM-4 N0 MICALIZZI PAOLO (syllabus) Program: the course of “History of the city and the territory” (monograph) provides investigations of the city through sections included between antiquity and the middle of XVIII century. During the lessons the students will be encouraged to understand a ruined construction through diagrams and sketches as well as to have a a structural approach to the building techniques used in Greek and Roman architecture. In order to gain a wide understanding of classical architecture the classes and site visits will focus on the aesthetical issues of classical architecture, the political significance of Imperial architecture in Rome, metrology, design issues, the context in which the buildings were designed and built, the historical sources, ancient treatises.

The course takes place in the first semester, and the program includes field-trips to archaeological sites and monuments, during which special drawing-assignments may also be done. Central to the course is the study on location of major monuments and archeological sites in central and southern Italy, including Rome, Ostia Antica, Pompeii, Herculaneum and Paestum. Topics 1. Building Roman Greece. Teaching Activities Attendance to lessons is highly recommended. The course includes 100 hours of lessons (8 credits) and takes place at the 4th year. Classes will be balanced between general discussion on Ancient Architecture and specific topics. Lessons will take place in the class and during visits to museums, archaeological sites, and monuments. Graphic activities will be strongly encouraged. Exams The exam is oral and individual. There is the possibility, on request, to have a written test. Student's knowledge and critical skills will be evaluated, also based on their capacity to refer to a historic frame; they are expected to know the contents of the different books of Vitruvius, and analyse the main features of the most relevant monuments of each historic period, and of the classical orders, through diagrams and sketches. 21010003 - Restoration building sites (objectives) The course offers students the opportunity to experience an introduction to the yard's own issues, with specific variation on the restoration site. Compatibly with the times and with the methods of teaching, addressing various application themes, observin, even on the field during inspections and visits by professionals and specialist technicians, the joints; They discuss and analyze some of the possible solutions to their problems of professional practice. - BRUNORI PAOLA (syllabus) The course aims to introduce the knowledge of restoration techniques through analysis of operating methods and direct knowledge of sites. Lectures consist mainly in analyzing interventions with particular regard to technical decisions, to implications they pose on site and on success of the work. 21002143 - CONTEMPORARY ISSUES IN ARCHITECTURAL RESTORATION IN EUROPE AND BEYOND (objectives) The course examines themes and exemplary and/or controversial international cases related to the restoration of monuments and the conservation of cultural heritage. - SEGARRA LAGUNES MARIA MARGARITA (syllabus) The course deals with issues and exemplary and/or controversial cases of the international debate on the restoration of monuments and on the conservation of cultural heritage. Criteria, traditions, methods and techniques, related to specific geographical areas, orient and consolidate different ways of operating in other latitudes, sometimes in analogy, sometimes in open contrast with the principles of the Italian restoration discipline. The monographic lectures, alongside the reading of the case studies, are accompanied by a continuous comparison with the documents and the international restoration charters, which evolve in parallel with the widening and progress of the conceptions on the nature and the specificity of the "cultural heritages", differentiated both for the contexts and geographical areas in which they arise, both for the history, traditions and cultures that have accompanied them over the centuries. The study of diversity, as well as cultural singularities - in the field of restoration - in other nations contributes to enrich the knowledge of the theme and broadens the reference horizons of those who will be called to intervene, overcoming ideological barriers and prejudices, with greater awareness and responsibility on the existing built. 21002139 - Planning of the Urban Recovery (objectives) The course aims at providing the elements of the discipline, methodology and technique to intervene in those urban areas, historical and not, identified since 1978 by the law 457, which introduced the instrument of the recovery plan. This also and especially in the light of the evolution that the instrument had over the years and the current urban dynamics, ever more interested in the recovery of the existing urban areas. - Derived from 21002139 PROGETTO DEL RECUPERO URBANISTICO in ARCHITETTURA - PROGETTAZIONE URBANA LM-4 CERASOLI MARIO (syllabus) Talking about urban renewal is an opportunity to learn and enhance the wealth of households, quarters and cities that form the majority of urban contexts in which we live. An historical centre, in particular, is a territorial context extremely delicate, with a distinct urban identity and a high historical value referable both to the urban structure and to the individual buildings, including those of significant value. Any planning action concerning an historical centre is therefore complex because "it is about, in the first place, to know it and recognize it, so as to understand its characteristics - spatial, documentary, functional - that identify it" (G.Piccinato, 2008). Understand, in essence, the territorial role. But also, and above all, it is important to understand the vision that the inhabitants and users have of the historical centre ("who owns the centre?"). The course aims at providing the elements of the discipline, methodology and technique to intervene in those urban areas, historical and not, identified since 1978 by the law 457, which introduced the instrument of the recovery plan. This also and especially in the light of the evolution that the instrument had over the years and the current urban dynamics, ever more interested in the recovery of the existing urban areas. The course will be divided in the following four parts, strictly related: 1. recovery planning: the scientific background and evolution of the disciplinary debate In this part the scientific context of urban renewal ("what we talk about?") in the field of the urban planning regulations will be defined and will run the history of the disciplinary debate that, since the Fifties, addressed urban contexts, and later even those degraded both in terms physical and social, will be studied. 2. legislation and planning instruments This part will analyze the texts of laws affecting the intervention on historical contexts, and in general on the existing building and urban structures, and related planning instruments, from the Recovery Plan (Art. 27 of Law 457 of 1978), up to the integrated programs of the nineties. 3. techniques The study of the techniques of interventions in historical contexts will make use of the analyses of recovery plans and detailed plans of town centres, checking out the objectives, contents, technical procedures, the procedural issues and, finally, the story of implementation. 4. a practical exercise Simultaneously with the theoretical disciplinary component, the study of a portion of a historical urban context will be addressed to set up an integrated strategy of recovery and valorization, which will include the Recovery Plan, the Mobility Plan, the Public Works Program, the socio-economic feasibility study, and identify related urban policies and participatory planning mechanisms. The course will consist of lectures, seminars, guided tours and design workshops. In particular, at the end of the course, a six-day intensive planning workshop will take place (scheduled from 11 to 16 June 2018) The course, optional, is open to students enrolled in the three master's degrees and will last 100 hours (8 credits). In order to take the exam students will have to give individual proof of having acquired the elements of the discipline provided during the course and illustrate the product of their exercise. The complexity of local structures requires close integration between design knowledge and the ability to implement the design. This entails a chain of actions tied up with regulatory aspects, funding and economic mechanisms, as well as the impact on the community and on public opinion. City transformations and a good quality of life also depend on the continuous management of systems (from mobility to the environment) for which social demand varies considerably over time. The course sets out to: • provide cognitive elements regarding the mechanisms behind the formation of the urban structure and relative management tools (feasibility studies, financing, marketing and communication), and systems for sizing and measuring demand for architectural initiatives and new city functions; • prepare students to simulate an actual feasibility study for an urban project that has already been undertaken. To this end the course addresses the themes, developed with a theoretical and applicative character, relating to the figures and procedures of the building process. It is then possible to find a complete representation of the building process describing the various figures involved (client, designer, builder, etc.) and their nature, the competences each of them must have, the relationships and procedures identified at the regulatory level regulatory and technical standards that are customary. Finally, the various phases that characterize the realization of a public work are presented. The class proposes and explains the digital means, the procedures, the uses and the organization of contemporary Design Offices mroe oriented toward innovation and integration of different instances in the design. 21010001 - SEMINARIO VILLARD (objectives) The optional course lasts the whole academic year and provides for the participation in the “Seminario itinerante di progettazione Villard”, reaches the seventeenth edition. To the Seminar participate 13 Faculties, Italian and foreign (Alghero, Ascoli Piceno, Napoli, Palermo, Paris Malaquais, Reggio Calabria, Patrasso, Roma, Venezia, Ancona, Milano, Genova, Pescara, Trapani) and some prestigious cultural institutions. The Seminar, is reserved to the students of the Laurea Magistrale and, for organizational matters, to a maximum of 10 students selected in base to the worth, through the presentation of a portfolio and an interview. The program foresees the layout of a project on the theme of year, generally proposed by administrations town or other institutions or corporate and, however, connected to different territorial realities. The theme is introduced at the beginning of the seminar and developed during the year according to the anticipated schedule. The trip and the knowledge of the cities constitutes the main core of the seminar. During every meetings, generally four and of the duration of two/three days, lessons, lectures, visits and shows are organized, with the contribution of the teachers of the Faculties participants. The itinerancy of the seminar ensures that students come into contact with different physical and cultural places, crossing experiences and knowledge with teachers and students from other cities. The seminar has its conclusion in a final event: the show, with the presentation and awarding of the best projects, followed by the publication of the catalog with the work of students and critical contributions collected during the seminar. - Derived from 21010001 SEMINARIO VILLARD in ARCHITETTURA - PROGETTAZIONE ARCHITETTONICA LM-4 DALL'OLIO LORENZO (syllabus) Villard is an annual itinerant design seminar, involving Italian and foreign Faculty of Architecture and some prestigious cultural institutions: the Faculty of Architecture of Alghero, Ascoli Piceno, Naples, Palermo, Patras, Paris Malaquais, Pescara, Reggio Calabria, Roma Tre, Venice, Milan Polytechnic, the University of Ancona Engineering. At the seminar can participate ten students from each faculty, enrolled in the last years of the course and selected on merit. The program involves the construction of a design project on a topic proposed by municipalities or other institutions, related to various local situations. The theme is presented at the workshop and developed in the year in the different stages. The trip is the backbone of the seminar as a knowledge of the city instrument. During each stage, with the contribution of the participating faculty teachers, they are organized meetings, classes, lectures, guided tours and exhibitions. Each stage lasts 3-4 days. The design work is carried out during the times that the various faculty dedicated to workshops. The meetings in different universities mean that the students come into contact with different physical and cultural places, crossing experiences and knowledge with teachers and students from other locations. The seminar brought to its conclusion at a final event: the exhibition, with the presentation and awarding of the best projects, followed by the publication of the catalog with the work of students and critical contributions collected during the seminar. The theme of the eighteenth edition of the seminar: "Sustainable urban regeneration", intends to open a debate on urban renewal as an opportunity for meeting and coexistence between cultures. Bringing economic analysis to city planning and management, the course will focus on urban public policy & private economic development, mainly in the real estate sector. Focusing on case studies will be the teaching core of the course and a rich basis for developing students’ problem solving and decision making skills will be provided. 21002066-1 - PROGETTAZIONE ARCHITETTONICA - Derived from 21002066-1 PROGETTAZIONE ARCHITETTONICA in ARCHITETTURA - PROGETTAZIONE URBANA LM-4 N0 CARERI FRANCESCO (syllabus) The course intervene at the core of the city in a creative, interdisciplinary and participatory way. It offers lessons about the relationship between arts, architecture and the city, and direct experiences such as urban explorations, realization of micro-structures at the 1:1 scale, events and performative actions of a high civic and symbolic content, in complex social contexts, with special attention to the intercultural city and the migrant's hospitality. Is divided in two parts. The first consists in lessons, explorations, fieldwork, conferences, seminars and workshops. The second is the elaboration of a project that can be: a traditional architectural project, that simulate with drawings and models some possible transformations, a "design and build" project at the one to one scale; other kinds of urban transformation's tactics, depending of the context. We will work in direct contact with the local area and its communities. We can explain the teaching approach goes in three main words: Arts Architecture City. By Arts we mean the tools of knowledge that guide us towards the comprehension of the dynamics of contemporary urban transformations; poetic glances that are able to reveal those aspects of the city that are often invisible, and to provoke their potentialities. We understand Architecture as a practice of reading and processing space, both in a physical and symbolic way. The course offers to the students an occasion to experiment the construction of an artefact in the city that is able to provoke social transformations. We view the City as a contested space, not just in terms of the formal regulations that aim to rule its development but in terms of those new dwelling practices that seek to transform housing and neighbourhoods, to change the use and meaning of public space, and to claim people’s right to the city. Criteria, traditions, methods and techniques, related to specific geographical areas, orient and consolidate different ways of operating in other latitudes, sometimes in analogy, sometimes in open contrast with the principles of the Italian restoration discipline. 21002139 - Planning of the Urban Recovery (objectives) The course aims at providing the elements of the discipline, methodology and technique to intervene in those urban areas, historical and not, identified since 1978 by the law 457, which introduced the instrument of the recovery plan. This also and especially in the light of the evolution that the instrument had over the years and the current urban dynamics, ever more interested in the recovery of the existing urban areas. - Derived from 21002139 PROGETTO DEL RECUPERO URBANISTICO in ARCHITETTURA - PROGETTAZIONE URBANA LM-4 CERASOLI MARIO (syllabus) Talking about urban renewal is an opportunity to learn and enhance the wealth of households, quarters and cities that form the majority of urban contexts in which we live. An historical centre, in particular, is a territorial context extremely delicate, with a distinct urban identity and a high historical value referable both to the urban structure and to the individual buildings, including those of significant value. Any planning action concerning an historical centre is therefore complex because "it is about, in the first place, to know it and recognize it, so as to understand its characteristics - spatial, documentary, functional - that identify it" (G.Piccinato, 2008). Understand, in essence, the territorial role. But also, and above all, it is important to understand the vision that the inhabitants and users have of the historical centre ("who owns the centre?"). The course aims at providing the elements of the discipline, methodology and technique to intervene in those urban areas, historical and not, identified since 1978 by the law 457, which introduced the instrument of the recovery plan. This also and especially in the light of the evolution that the instrument had over the years and the current urban dynamics, ever more interested in the recovery of the existing urban areas. The course will be divided in the following four parts, strictly related: 1. recovery planning: the scientific background and evolution of the disciplinary debate In this part the scientific context of urban renewal ("what we talk about?") in the field of the urban planning regulations will be defined and will run the history of the disciplinary debate that, since the Fifties, addressed urban contexts, and later even those degraded both in terms physical and social, will be studied. 2. legislation and planning instruments This part will analyze the texts of laws affecting the intervention on historical contexts, and in general on the existing building and urban structures, and related planning instruments, from the Recovery Plan (Art. 27 of Law 457 of 1978), up to the integrated programs of the nineties. 3. techniques The study of the techniques of interventions in historical contexts will make use of the analyses of recovery plans and detailed plans of town centres, checking out the objectives, contents, technical procedures, the procedural issues and, finally, the story of implementation. 4. a practical exercise Simultaneously with the theoretical disciplinary component, the study of a portion of a historical urban context will be addressed to set up an integrated strategy of recovery and valorization, which will include the Recovery Plan, the Mobility Plan, the Public Works Program, the socio-economic feasibility study, and identify related urban policies and participatory planning mechanisms. The course will consist of lectures, seminars, guided tours and design workshops. In particular, at the end of the course, a six-day intensive planning workshop will take place (scheduled from 11 to 16 June 2018) The course, optional, is open to students enrolled in the three master's degrees and will last 100 hours (8 credits). The complexity of local structures requires close integration between design knowledge and the ability to implement the design. This entails a chain of actions tied up with regulatory aspects, funding and economic mechanisms, as well as the impact on the community and on public opinion. City transformations and a good quality of life also depend on the continuous management of systems (from mobility to the environment) for which social demand varies considerably over time. It is then possible to find a complete representation of the building process describing the various figures involved (client, designer, builder, etc.) and their nature, the competences each of them must have, the relationships and procedures identified at the regulatory level regulatory and technical standards that are customary. Finally, the various phases that characterize the realization of a public work are presented. The course is divided into two modules: the first one dedicated to organization and security at construction sites and a second dedicated to safety management during design and construction. Both modules will focus on the concept of risk analysis and assessment, thus enabling a virtuous path in the acquisition by students of the ability to plan the security project at all stages. Module A. Construction, organization and security process at site The module is divided into two parts: A1. Site construction, use of machinery and safety devices. With particular reference to the issue of occupational safety, they are studied and exemplified with respect to the construction site concerned, the problems associated with the layout and logistics of the yard, the operation of machinery and production equipment, scaffolding and provisional works, construction sites, toilets, safety signs, personal and collective protection devices. Exercise activities are related to the design of the yard in its evolutionary phases; A2. Analytical techniques for managing the production process. The decision-making situations typical of the management of building production are studied, largely referring to the formalization of Operational Research and ISO 9000 standards. Security management during design and construction The teaching is integrated with that of the previous module and aims to provide knowledge and techniques for designing and managing safety on site. 21010001 - SEMINARIO VILLARD (objectives) The optional course lasts the whole academic year and provides for the participation in the “Seminario itinerante di progettazione Villard”, reaches the seventeenth edition. To the Seminar participate 13 Faculties, Italian and foreign (Alghero, Ascoli Piceno, Napoli, Palermo, Paris Malaquais, Reggio Calabria, Patrasso, Roma, Venezia, Ancona, Milano, Genova, Pescara, Trapani) and some prestigious cultural institutions. The Seminar, is reserved to the students of the Laurea Magistrale and, for organizational matters, to a maximum of 10 students selected in base to the worth, through the presentation of a portfolio and an interview. The program foresees the layout of a project on the theme of year, generally proposed by administrations town or other institutions or corporate and, however, connected to different territorial realities. The theme is introduced at the beginning of the seminar and developed during the year according to the anticipated schedule. The trip and the knowledge of the cities constitutes the main core of the seminar. During every meetings, generally four and of the duration of two/three days, lessons, lectures, visits and shows are organized, with the contribution of the teachers of the Faculties participants. The itinerancy of the seminar ensures that students come into contact with different physical and cultural places, crossing experiences and knowledge with teachers and students from other cities. The program involves the construction of a design project on a topic proposed by municipalities or other institutions, related to various local situations. The theme is presented at the workshop and developed in the year in the different stages. The trip is the backbone of the seminar as a knowledge of the city instrument. During each stage, with the contribution of the participating faculty teachers, they are organized meetings, classes, lectures, guided tours and exhibitions. Each stage lasts 3-4 days. The design work is carried out during the times that the various faculty dedicated to workshops. The meetings in different universities mean that the students come into contact with different physical and cultural places, crossing experiences and knowledge with teachers and students from other locations. The seminar brought to its conclusion at a final event: the exhibition, with the presentation and awarding of the best projects, followed by the publication of the catalog with the work of students and critical contributions collected during the seminar. In order to enhance the capacity to observe and interpret architecture the students will be given the possibility to gather information through autoptic observations with minimal measurements, and then transfer them into a series of diagrammatic drawings. This will be achieved through two stages of analysis. On site observations. Some lessons will be held in the field where the students will be asked to take notes on structural, architectural and construction elements. It will be necessary to observe in detail buildings, select significant elements of their fabric, understand the plan and elevation, analyse the overall plan of the building to reconstruct the design concept. All observations will be transferred to a sketchbook. Class exercises will aim at enhancing the capacity to interpret data collected on-site in a rational and critical way. The aim is to reconstruct the design and construction process, interpret the structural layout of the buildings, understand how a fabric was conceived and executed, analyse the decoration and understand the building phases. Drawings will have the form of diagrams, i.e. abstract representations through line graphs -including maps, plans, sections, elevations and axonometries. 21010018 - STRATEGIE PROGETTUALI PER LA PREVENZIONE INCENDI (objectives) The course, aimed at enrolling professionals in the lists of the Ministry of the Interior - referred to in art. 4 of the Ministry of Interior Decree of August 5, 2011 - aims to provide future professionals with the main methodological indications to define, from the design stage, the fire safety requirements integrated with the other design requirements. - Derived from 21010018 STRATEGIE PROGETTUALI PER LA PREVENZIONE INCENDI in SCIENZE DELL'ARCHITETTURA L-17 SIMONETTI ALFREDO (syllabus) The course is divided into thirteen training modules, which can not be modified in terms of number and arguments. In relation to the complexity of the topics discussed, some modules have been foreseen for a learning test, both as a didactic and non-evaluative course, the completion of which will be determined by the teacher in conjunction with the direction of the course. Additionally, at the end of modules 10, 11, 12 the learners must deal with the predisposition of a fire prevention project under the guidance of the teacher. Overall, the minimum training course is 120 hours. The faculty of the organizer, in relation to specific territorial and / or sub-area needs, remains to be able to add further arguments or to deepen the ones foreseen in the individual modules for a greater overall duration. Class attendance is compulsory and can not be allowed to take the final exam for students who have completed absences of more than 10% of the total duration of the course. For the purpose of achieving the minimum amount of hours for admission to the final exam, the organizer of the course may include, before the examination, supplementary teaching modules for the learners who need it. Part of the course is intended for the acquisition of the most frequently used notions that characterize the fire safety of activities subject to fire prevention procedures. This is achieved with the implementation of Modules 11 and 12, in which professionals, in addition to deepening the knowledge of technical rules, are confronted, through practical exercises, with the adaptation of buildings to the requirements required by the specific technical rules. 21010019 - PROGETTO DELL'ABITAZIONE E SPERIMENTAZIONE EDILIZIA (objectives) The aim of this course is to develope rethinking the relations among Housing design and the most innovative experiences -less or more present in the contemporary practice- which have been introduced in design methods, building technologies, constructive solutions. Lectures will deal with case studies from some of the "masters" of the XX century and will focus on these issues: 1- neighborhood units in the co-housing projects; 2-requalification of public Housing schemes either for tenants or in case of ownership; 3-how to build for the emergency in poor countries; 4-building rules, prefabrication, flexibility; 5-experimental projects for energy saving; 6-transformability of the Housing structures; 7-how to take advantages from houses as prototypes. We can add that the Course is organised in such a way that the students have to discuss with the professor, in the second part of the time for his lecture, specific aspects related with the issues focused in the first part. Such a debate gives opportunity to introduce the subjects also in a different sequence as regard to the one which should have been be proposed from the beginning, according to the way students activate their questioning. When we consider transformation and transformability of the housing stock it's easy to introduce a typical case (Cf.,"Time Builds") such as the PREVI LIMA project in Perù (1968/73) which opens up to Elemental by Alexandro Aravena, to the design problems of the urban tissues, introduces the genealogy of the Mat buiding and reaches the Team 10 Group theoretical statements. Through Bakema and van der Broek, Giancarlo de Carlo, Ralph Erskine (+ Klas Tham for his BO 01 in Malmö) we easily arrive to Herman Hertzberger and the challenges he is actually facing to adapt some of his seminal buildings to new needs. We may symbolically conclude with "The City at Eye level", that helps considering the city and it's buildings from the plynths, which means how to requalify the urban space "par exellence" that is the street. 21010008 - ANCIENT ARCHITECTURE:THEORIES, TYPES, AND TECHNIQUES (objectives) The course aims at offering the students the tools for analysing and understanding ancient architecture through a didactic strategy based both on an historical process-based outlook (crucial for an architect's background) and more practical design-based topics, highlighting traditional materials and building techniques, structural behaviour of traditional construction, principles of architectural design, the architectural language of classical orders. During the lessons the students will be encouraged to understand a ruined construction through diagrams and sketches as well as to have a a structural approach to the building techniques used in Greek and Roman architecture. In order to gain a wide understanding of classical architecture the classes and site visits will focus on the aesthetical issues of classical architecture, the political significance of Imperial architecture in Rome, metrology, design issues, the context in which the buildings were designed and built, the historical sources, ancient treatises.

21002097-2 - ESTIMO (objectives) The module, equal to 60 hours, will provide students with the most current methodologies and evaluation techniques, as envisaged in the Restoration Laboratory of the program with which the "Form of Evaluation" interacts. The economic and financial evaluation is considered "the restoration project verification and control" for a possible feasibility and reasonable affordability. Through case studies, students will be able to check the total cost of similar interventions, moving in the direction of improving the quality of the existing space. It is hoped that this is done through the allocation to the project of an added value, taken using valuation techniques that proceed in parallel with the restoration. Attending students, will acquire principles, evaluation methods and techniques required to estimate the possible investments to be addressed in the context chosen as a case study. They will conclude their experience with a "reckoning" of the project entries. - PASSERI ALFREDO (syllabus) The University has a duty to form a "professional educated", an independent figure of a scholar versed in science and humanities. In short, a combination of technology and art. The project - mainly on the basis of the foregoing - can not be high that a "fact choral"; ie, never the work of a genius Isolated. 21002097-1 - RESTAURO (objectives) Study of the design process of the restoration of architecture, from the theoretical and analytical fields to the operational aspects. The application of this process has the objective of designing and defining appropriate interventions in architectural restoration of selected case studies. During the workshop technical insights are provided on the importance of historic buildings and the physical technique applied. The module of quantity survey provides the economic and financial evaluation for a possible feasibility and cost effectiveness. Through case studies, students will be able to check the total cost of similar interventions, moving in the direction of improving the quality of existing space. - PUGLIANO ANTONIO (syllabus) The didactic activity of the Restoration Laboratory Course will provide to every student the operative fundamentals (cognitive, critical and technical) addressed to the knowledge of the method of an architectonic Restoration project: for every case of study, such method will be also experienced by the student, by personally drawing, under the guidance of tutors, a restoration project concerning ancient, medieval or modern prominent building or urban sites. For this purpose, every project will be instructed by deepening both requested historical and analytical aspects to the extent of the detailed working drawing. Furthermore, the didactic activity will be structured in modules aimed at contributing to the projects by both producing specific didactic materials and organizing practical guided activities as far as survey drawings and appropriate installation approaches to every case of study will be concerned. 21002098 - TECHNICAL PHYSICS - FRASCAROLO MARCO (syllabus) Technical Physics class is focused on lighting design concepts for highlight and conservation of historical buildings, monuments and archeological areas. Rules and project methods in indoor and outdoor environment will be improved, also considering needs for new activities. Lighting projects will be developed, respecting historical, architectural, constructive aspects of buildings. 21002100-2 - RESTAURO ARCHITETTONICO REGIONALISTA (objectives) The course aims to accompany students in the final critical reflection on the different educational experiences in the three and two academic years in the restoration field. To this end, culture of architectural heritage themes, that already have been addressed during the studies (conservation, restoration and reconstruction in archaeology (era corretto anche come lo aveva scritto lei: gli inglesi però lo scrivono così), monumental, urban and architectural contexts regionalist) are subject of analysis. Also, during the semester, the students are offered a possible confrontation with the theoretical research on architectural design in the sub-class of Architectural and urban design. Lectures and design exercises are carried out with the support of specialized external collaborations (officials of public institutions, businesses and restorers). - STABILE FRANCESCA ROMANA (syllabus) Architectural regionalism. From Modernism to the revival of Medieval architecture: history, studies and projects. Gustavo Giovannoni: urban restoration and decentralization of the residential neighbourhoods.It is possible to compare Giovannoni’s thoughts and interventions in the architectural field to interpret various aspects of his ideology on the ideal purpose and physical structure of the city. The debate on the ambientismo – fuelled by architects and honorary fellows, led by Giovannoni and the Associazione Artistica fra i Cultori di Architettura – recognise the historical architecture, as well as the picturesque feeling inherent the historical urban pattern, as a possible model both to thin out the urban pattern for a healthiness reason and to decentralize new residential districts. Therefore, the ambientista approach is clearly influenced by the urban principles of Camillo Sitte, Charles Buls and Joseph Stübben and by the idea of garden city of Ebenezer Howard and Raymond Unwin. Hence, between the 1910s and the 1920s, the ambientismo became the core principle of the urban and architectural project, identifying and reinterpreting the artistic and environmental features typical of each country, while considering the instances of modern building. It is possible to find this cultural orientation in various projects in Rome, such as San Saba, Aniene’s garden city in Montesacro, Ostia Nuova, the garden neighbourhood of Garbatella; all these projects were planned following Giovannoni’s theories and taking care of the relationship between Vecchie città ed edilizia nuova. 21002100-3 - TEORIA DELLA RICERCA ARCHITETTONICA - BECCU MICHELE (syllabus) The course entitled ‘Theories of Architectural Research’ intends to place itself organically within the teaching lines and research of the Architecture Department and its educational offer. The course pays special attention to issues of Heritage. The built, archaeological and artistic heritage cannot be conserved, maintained or innovated without a strong theoretical and critical awareness, as can be seen in the tradition of Italian architectural culture. With the Course of ‘Theories of Architectural Research’ we intend to supply architecture students with a contribution in this direction, that is with the knowledge that Theory is a fundamental and autonomous part of the Architectural Discipline, through a set of specifically chosen Theories, individual reflections, books, manuals, constructed and paper projects. The Theory of Architecture is neither a “how to” guide nor a justification that follows the establishment of an architecture, but rather a stand-alone instance of architectural thought. The course considers the need for an inseparable relationship between architecture and theory; the establishment of a mutual need between architectural design, its concrete exercising, and the advancement of theoretical reflection; and the systemization of disciplinary knowledge that brings the iridescent variety of technological, spatial, material, and applicable innovation within a framework of critical awareness, disciplinary systemization and advancement of knowledge.
